Location, location, location

I keep bouncing back and forth about where to set my show. I want to set it in Albuquerque, but since I’ve never physically been there, I worry that it’s not going to be realistic, and that I should instead choose a place I have been, so I can follow the old rule about writing what you know. Granted, the premise of this series is not something I’m personally familiar with, but it’s what my idea is, so I’ll research it as much as I can.

I can always go and explore a location when I’m in the US in September, but it would be limited to the Tri-State area really, unless I want to get on yet another plane, and fly for 5-6 hours just for a couple of days. I guess if I really want to set it in New Mexico, I’ll make the effort.

First scene epiphany

Ever since I came up with the overall concept for the show, I’ve been trying to figure out how to introduce the characters, and set up the premise. Some of the ideas I had for this have been done before, so I didn’t want to plagiarise any of those. Last night, I managed to come up with an idea that (while I probably have seen before) I think will work and not look like I’ve stolen it from someone else. By no means is it completely original, but it definitely introduces the characters and encourages the motivation for the story’s premise.
So I actually wrote some basic description and dialogue for the very first scene, which I’m all kinds of excited about! I would have loved to just sit at the computer and let it keep flowing, but it was nearing midnight, and the day job still beckons. I think I’m definitely going to have to restock my handbag with a notebook in case more ideas strike while I’m away from home.

Let the Games Begin!

I’m planning to set my show in a US city, preferably one with a strong college presence or feel to it. At the moment, I’m looking at Albuquerque, however I’ve never visited there myself. All I know about the place at the moment is what I’ve read on wikipedia, the official city website, and that High School Musical and Little Miss Sunshine were set there.

The other thing I need help with is finding some college students to talk to, both males and females, and preferably freshmen or sophomores only. I’m thinking of setting up a survey or poll somewhere online, and then posting messages on groups and mailing lists asking for volunteers to participate. I just need to find a decent poll that allows me to set up the form the way I want it. Oh, and figuring out the questions would help too!

There’s so much to figure out before I even start writing the script, but I’m excited. I’ve been able to go further with this concept than I have previously, and that’s really exciting. Now, if I can just squeeze this in between work and classes, I’ll be on my way!

Once upon a time…

there was a very cliched writer who decided it was high time she started writing out in the real world.  It was a big, scary place, with real criticism, real appreciation, real failure, and hopefully, one day, real success.  She decided that the first step into the big bad real world was to start a blog, and record all of her thoughts, ideas and plans for her writing career. Now, she just needs to find someone who’s interested in reading her random blatherings… perhaps tie them to a chair, prop their eyes open with toothpicks, or maybe dye their hair bright red, shove their head into a bucket of water until they cave and tell you the code… oh sorry, that’s already been done.
